Ngorongoro Heroes have secured a place in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) U-20 finals, earning the second qualification slot allocated to the CECAFA region after defeating Burundi 2-0 in the regional championship semifinals.
The victory at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam on February 22, 2026 means Tanzania will join Sudan as CECAFA’s representatives at the continental U-20 finals, scheduled to be staged in Accra, Ghana, next year.
The qualification marks an important step for Tanzania’s youth football programme, giving a new generation of players an opportunity to test themselves against some of Africa’s strongest U-20 sides.
Tanzania settled the semifinal against Burundi with two goals in the opening 33 minutes.
Young Africans Sports Club forward Juma Abushiri opened the scoring inside the first quarter of an hour, scoring directly from a corner kick that beat Burundi goalkeeper Omari Niyonkuru.
Tanzania doubled its advantage in the 33rd minute when Bashiri Salum Kibaila of Simba Sports Club provided the assist for Dodoma Jiji’s Faraji Kayanda, who finished to put Mario Rivera Campesino’s side 2-0 ahead.
With the qualification objective effectively within reach, Tanzania adopted a more cautious approach in the second half, protecting its advantage rather than taking unnecessary risks.
The result sent Ngorongoro Heroes into the CECAFA U-20 final against Sudan, which secured its place after beating Uganda 3-2 in the other semifinal. The final will be preceded by the third-place playoff between Uganda and Burundi.
A bigger opportunity for Tanzania
Beyond the regional title at stake, the CECAFA tournament has provided Tanzania with a pathway to a much bigger continental stage.
Qualification for the AFCON U-20 finals gives the players an opportunity to compete against leading youth teams from across Africa, while also providing a platform for emerging Tanzanian talent to attract greater attention from domestic and international clubs.
For Tanzania, the challenge now extends beyond winning the CECAFA title. The AFCON finals will provide a stronger test of the country’s youth development system and the ability of its emerging players to compete at continental level.
