Sport is proving to be far more than competition for Stanbic Bank Tanzania.
It has become a strategic platform for strengthening business, investment and cultural ties between Tanzania and China, with the Bank reaffirming its long-term commitment to the Chinese business community through a TSh 30 million sponsorship of the 2026 Chinese Basketball Tournament while also fielding its own team in the competition.
The lender’s unique decision to participate as both sponsor and competitor at the tournament, held at Don Bosco Grounds in Dar es Salaam, underscored its belief that enduring partnerships are built through shared experiences rather than financial transactions alone.
The sponsorship cheque was presented in the presence of the Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Chen Mingjian, highlighting the growing significance of private-sector collaboration in strengthening bilateral relations.
For Stanbic Bank, the tournament has evolved into one of its most important platforms for engaging Chinese businesses operating in Tanzania, creating opportunities for networking, relationship-building and cultural exchange while reinforcing its position as a trusted financial partner for Chinese investors expanding across Tanzania and the wider African market.
Speaking at the event, Stanbic Bank’s Head of Corporate and Investment Banking, Ester Manase, said the sponsorship reflects the Bank’s broader commitment to building meaningful, long-term relationships.
“Over the years, this tournament has been one of our most valued platforms for engaging the Chinese community in Tanzania because strong partnerships are built through shared experiences, not transactions alone. That same commitment underpins our work through Standard Bank Group, our partnership with ICBC and our Chinese Desk, which connects Chinese businesses to opportunities across Tanzania and Africa,” she said.

She added that the Bank’s involvement extends well beyond supporting a sporting event.
“Our TSh 30 million sponsorship is about more than funding a competition. By taking part as both sponsor and competitor, we are demonstrating that our engagement is genuine and enduring. We remain committed to partnerships that foster community engagement, cultural exchange and shared growth.”
Ambassador Chen commended Stanbic Bank for its consistent support, describing the tournament as an important platform for strengthening friendship and mutual understanding between the people of Tanzania and China.
“The relationship between China and Tanzania is deep-rooted, and it grows stronger through moments like these, where sport unites us in a spirit of goodwill and mutual respect,” she said, noting that partnerships between businesses and communities continue to reinforce the enduring friendship between the two nations.

Echoing those sentiments, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, said sports remain one of the most effective tools for promoting friendship and cooperation, adding that Tanzania’s strategic partnership with China now spans infrastructure, trade, tourism, education, sports and culture. As Chinese investment continues to expand across Tanzania, initiatives such as the Chinese Basketball Tournament are increasingly evolving beyond sporting competitions into strategic platforms for business networking, cultural diplomacy and people-to-people engagement – an approach that Stanbic Bank is embracing as it strengthens its partnership with one of Tanzania’s most important investment communities.
