Last week, former President Jakaya Kikwete officiated events marking Prostate Cancer Awareness Month at Kairuki Hospital in Dar es Salaam, where he urged men to make prostate cancer screening a routine part of their healthcare.
The Fourth Phase Government leader called on men not to fear screening, emphasising that early detection can significantly improve treatment options and outcomes.
During his visit, Kikwete toured Kairuki Hospital’s High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) facility, an advanced technology that uses focused ultrasound energy to target tumours without conventional surgery.
He commended the hospital’s investment in the technology, saying it provides an important treatment option for patients with prostate cancer and other tumours while potentially reducing recovery time.
HIFU Specialist Fredy Rutachunzimbwa said 444 patients have been treated at the facility since the installation of the HIFU machine, including 95 men treated for prostate-cancer-related tumours.
