The Tanzanian government has intensified oversight of the 49.5MW Malagarasi Hydropower Project in Kigoma as part of broader efforts to strengthen accountability and accelerate strategic energy infrastructure development.
During an inspection tour, Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of implementation by Chinese contractor Dongfang Electric International Corporation, citing delays and failure to meet contractual obligations. The minister ordered a special audit into the use of more than US$20 million already paid to the contractor as advance funding and directed the immediate removal of the contractor’s project manager over what he described as weak supervision and poor performance.
