TBL’s people-first sustainability model earns national recognition

Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) has earned national recognition for putting people at the centre of its sustainability strategy after winning the People Category at the 2026 Business SDG Awards.

The victory further strengthens the brewer’s standing as one of Tanzania’s corporate sustainability leaders, recognising its commitment to building an inclusive business model that delivers economic value while empowering employees, farmers, entrepreneurs, suppliers and communities.

The award, presented by the Global Compact Network Tanzania, recognises companies making measurable contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The People Category honours businesses that promote decent work, inclusion, stronger communities and improved livelihoods through practical action.

Receiving the award, TBL Managing Director Michelle Kilpin said the recognition reflects the company’s conviction that sustainable growth begins with investing in people.

“This award is a proud moment for TBL because it recognises the people behind our business and the communities connected to our value chain. Our employees, farmers, retailers, suppliers, partners and consumers all play an important role in our success. As TBL, we remain committed to growing in a way that creates real value for Tanzania and supports a more inclusive and sustainable future.”

Her remarks capture the philosophy that has increasingly defined TBL’s sustainability agenda – one that views commercial success and social progress as mutually reinforcing rather than competing objectives.

The recognition comes as businesses face growing expectations to demonstrate how they create value beyond profits. For TBL, that value extends across a broad ecosystem of employees, farmers, suppliers, distributors, retailers and entrepreneurs whose participation strengthens both the company’s operations and Tanzania’s wider economy.

As one of the country’s largest manufacturing companies, TBL has built an extensive local value chain that supports thousands of livelihoods directly and indirectly. Through investments in local sourcing, agriculture, manufacturing, logistics and retail networks, the brewer has continued to contribute to industrial growth while expanding opportunities for Tanzanian businesses and communities.

Its agricultural programmes, in particular, have helped strengthen local supply chains by supporting farmers with improved farming practices, technical knowledge, market access and long-term commercial partnerships. These initiatives improve farm productivity while reducing reliance on imported raw materials, creating shared value for both producers and industry.

The company has also continued to support enterprise development by creating opportunities for distributors, retailers and other small businesses that form an integral part of its nationwide value chain. At the same time, TBL has maintained a strong focus on employee safety, inclusion, ethics and responsible workplace practices, recognising that sustainable growth depends on a motivated and empowered workforce.

The latest accolade further broadens TBL’s sustainability credentials. In recent years, the company has earned recognition for environmental initiatives ranging from responsible water stewardship and circular packaging systems to recycling and the reuse of production by-products. The 2026 People Category Award highlights the equally important social dimension of its sustainability agenda.

Beyond celebrating TBL’s achievement, the award reinforces a broader national message: sustainable development requires businesses to generate lasting value for people as well as shareholders. As Tanzania pursues its industrialisation agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, companies that strengthen local value chains, create decent jobs, support farmers and empower small enterprises will remain critical partners in delivering inclusive economic growth. For TBL, the recognition is more than another corporate accolade. It affirms a long-term strategy of building a business whose success is measured not only by financial performance, but also by the opportunities it creates, the livelihoods it supports and the positive impact it leaves on communities across Tanzania.
