NMB puts workers’ health first as SHIMISEMITA 2026 draws 5,000 public servants

NMB Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to employee wellbeing and quality public service delivery by supporting the 2026 National SHIMISEMITA Games, which have brought together more than 5,000 public servants from 184 local government authorities in Mbeya Region.

The bank’s participation reflects its broader view that investing in workers’ physical and mental wellbeing can contribute to a healthier, more productive workforce and ultimately improve services delivered to citizens.

NMB Highlands Zone Manager, Wogofya Mfalamagoha, said the bank’s support was driven by its belief in the connection between employee health, productivity and service delivery.

“Our participation is based on the belief that a healthy public servant has a greater opportunity to be productive and provide better services to citizens,” Mr Mfalamagoha said.

For SHIMISEMITA 2026, NMB has committed TSh 34.5 million and provided jerseys to teams qualifying for the quarter-finals in football, volleyball, netball and basketball.

The support has positioned NMB among private-sector stakeholders partnering with the Government in initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of public servants while promoting teamwork, discipline and healthy lifestyles.

The Government has welcomed such partnerships.

The guest of honour, Minister of State in the President’s Office – PORALG, Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, who represented Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, commended NMB for its continued cooperation with the Government in activities that contribute to the wellbeing of workers and citizens.

He said sports play an important role in strengthening unity and solidarity among local government employees. Beyond health and teamwork, the games are also generating economic benefits for Mbeya, according to Regional Commissioner Beno Malisa.

RC Malisa said the arrival of thousands of participants has increased economic activity in the region, providing opportunities for businesses and service providers benefiting from the influx of visitors.

He said SHIMISEMITA demonstrates how sports can simultaneously promote workers’ health and strengthen cooperation, coming at a time when Tanzania is preparing to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Kenya and Uganda.

The SHIMISEMITA platform therefore goes beyond competition. It is emerging as a vehicle for promoting healthier workers, stronger institutions, greater social interaction and local economic activity—areas that complement Tanzania’s broader development ambitions. For NMB, continued support for the games reinforces its positioning as a partner in initiatives that promote the wellbeing and productivity of Tanzanians.

SHIMISEMITA is an annual national sports platform that brings together employees of local government authorities to compete, promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen teamwork.

Beyond sporting competition, it serves as a platform for advancing employee health and wellbeing, fostering unity and collaboration, and supporting greater productivity and effectiveness in public service delivery.
