Mixx Tanzania plans to expand services available through its network of more than 270,000 agents, opening up additional sources of income beyond commissions from cash deposits and withdrawals.

The company said the move would allow agents to handle more of their customers’ financial needs while growing their businesses.

Speaking at the Mixx Wakala Brunch in Dar es Salaam recently, Mixx Tanzania Chief Executive Officer Louis-Olivier Favot said expanding services at agent outlets forms part of the company’s plans to strengthen its partnership with agents.

“We plan to offer more services through your outlets so that you can earn beyond commissions from deposits and withdrawals,” he said.

The event marked 16 years of partnership with agents, whose network now serves about 28 million Tanzanians.

“From the early days of Tigo Pesa to Mixx today, you have helped us build this business. You open early and close late, serving customers every day. You make sure cash, float and change are available, and your communities continue to trust you,” Mr Favot said.

For agents, earning opportunities also depend on having enough cash and electronic float to complete transactions. Shortages can mean lost commissions as customers turn to other outlets.

Mixx said more than 7,000 agents are already accessing additional float through Bustisha Wakala, a service introduced in partnership with KCB Bank Tanzania. Mr Favot encouraged more agents to use the facility to maintain reliable service at their outlets.

The company is also promoting the Mixx Wakala App, which allows agents to manage transactions and monitor their businesses through their phones.

As part of its plans towards 2030, Mixx aims to help more agents use digital tools to manage their operations and serve more customers. Favot said agents’ feedback would guide improvements to its services.

Mr Favot also announced plans for regular meetings between agents and the company’s leadership, including himself, to discuss business challenges, proposed improvements and opportunities to strengthen their partnership.

Mixx will periodically review its business terms and arrangements with agents to ensure both sides benefit and agents’ contributions are properly recognised.

For John Mkwizu, a Mixx agent based in Magomeni, Dar es Salaam, access to float is essential to keeping customers and protecting his earnings.

“Customers depend on us to access their money when they need it. When I cannot complete a transaction, they have to find another agent, and I lose the commission. Access to float helps me keep serving them, while the Mixx Wakala App makes it easier to manage my daily transactions,” he said. “As an agent, I want to provide a reliable service, give customers a reason to return and earn enough to grow my business.”
