East Africa’s science, technology, and innovation ecosystem is poised for a transformative leap, as the region prepares to host the 4th East African Community (EAC) Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Conference from 30th March to 1st April 2026 at the Kigali Convention Centre.

Jointly convened by the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) and the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), the conference will bring together leading policymakers, researchers, and private sector innovators under the theme: “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for a Resilient, Inclusive, and Innovative East Africa.”

A statement said the conference will be opened by Rwanda’s Minister for ICT and Innovation, Paula Ingabire, setting the tone for a high-level discourse on how artificial intelligence (AI) can catalyse inclusive growth, strengthen resilience, and accelerate regional development.

The conference is expected to attract more than 680 delegates, including heads of EAC institutions, ministerial representatives, research leaders, development partners, and private sector actors from all eight Partner States. Hybrid streaming will also allow wider participation across the region.

“This conference is not merely a gathering of experts; it is a call to collective action,” said Dr. Sylvance Okoth, Executive Secretary of EASTECO. “East Africa stands at a defining crossroads, and how we choose to harness AI in the coming years will determine the prosperity and resilience of our region for generations to come.”

Now in its fourth edition, the biennial STI Conference series has firmly established itself as East Africa’s premier platform for science-driven dialogue, strategic collaboration, and policy advancement.

This year’s conference is particularly significant as the first edition to place AI at its core, recognising it not only as the defining technology of our era but also as a strategic enabler for the ambitions outlined in the EAC’s 7th Development Strategy.

Prof. Idris Rai, Acting Executive Secretary of IUCEA, underscored the importance of universities and research institutions in shaping the region’s AI-driven future. “The university and research community across East Africa has a defining role to play in shaping an AI-driven future that is equitable, evidence-based, and grounded in the realities of our region,” he said. “This conference strengthens institutional capacity to drive transformation and positions higher education as a catalyst for sustainable and inclusive growth.”

Over three days, delegates will engage in an intensive programme that includes plenary sessions, parallel paper presentations, ministerial dialogues, youth and women entrepreneurship showcases, innovation exhibitions, and partner side events. Key discussion points will focus on regional AI adoption strategies, ethical frameworks, policy alignment, and private sector engagement.

The conference also aims to foster multi-sector partnerships, align regional priorities, and accelerate responsible AI deployment across East Africa. For businesses, policymakers, and investors, the event offers a unique opportunity to understand emerging trends, identify investment opportunities, and explore scalable innovations that can reshape East Africa’s socio-economic landscape.

As the region positions itself for a digitally-driven future, this STI Conference represents more than a knowledge-sharing platform; it is a strategic milestone in East Africa’s journey to leverage AI for sustainable development, economic competitiveness, and inclusive growth.

Key takeaways for businesses and policymakers

  • AI adoption in East Africa is becoming central to the EAC’s 7th Development Strategy.
  • Universities and research institutions will play a critical role in shaping an inclusive, evidence-based AI ecosystem.
