Tanzania is mourning the death of former central bank governor Dr. Idris Rashid, a veteran banker and economist who played a key role in the country’s financial sector during a critical period of economic transition in the 1990s.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan sent a condolence message to the Governor of the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), expressing sympathy to the central bank, Rashid’s family and the wider financial community.
In her message, the president described Rashid as a dedicated public servant whose leadership contributed to strengthening Tanzania’s financial institutions and supporting economic reforms.
The Bank of Tanzania also issued a statement mourning the former governor, noting that his contributions helped shape the country’s modern banking system.
Several government institutions, financial sector stakeholders and public figures have also expressed condolences following his death.
Role in Tanzania’s financial reforms
Rashid served as the Governor of the Bank of Tanzania from 1993 to 1998, becoming the fourth head of the central bank since its establishment in 1966.
His tenure coincided with a crucial period when Tanzania was transitioning from a state-controlled economic system toward a more market-oriented economy.
During that time, the central bank played a major role in implementing financial sector reforms, including strengthening banking supervision and supporting the liberalisation of the financial system.
Rashid was also involved in efforts to stabilise the banking sector, including interventions aimed at protecting depositors and safeguarding financial stability during periods of institutional stress.
Before becoming central bank governor, Rashid served as Managing Director of the National Bank of Commerce (NBC), then the country’s largest commercial bank.
His experience in both commercial banking and monetary policy placed him at the centre of Tanzania’s financial sector development during the 1990s.
A career in public service
Rashid began his career at the Bank of Tanzania in the early 1970s after graduating from the University of Dar es Salaam.
Over the years he rose through the ranks of the country’s financial institutions, becoming one of the most prominent figures in Tanzania’s banking sector.
Colleagues and economists have described him as a pragmatic financial technocrat who helped guide the central bank during a period of structural economic reform.

He also served as Managing Director of national power utility firm, Tanesco.
Legacy in Tanzania’s banking sector
Economists say Rashid’s tenure came at a time when Tanzania was opening its financial sector to competition and foreign investment.
The reforms implemented during the 1990s laid the foundation for the modern banking industry that exists in the country today.
The Bank of Tanzania said Rashid’s leadership and institutional experience helped strengthen the central bank during a period of major economic transformation. Funeral arrangements were expected to be announced by the family.
