President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has been awarded a prestigious honour by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the growth and transformation of football in the country and across the continent.

The award, presented today in the Moroccan capital Rabat, was received on her behalf by Gerson Msigwa, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports and the Official Government Spokesperson.

The ceremony was also attended by Wallace Karia, President of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) and CAF Executive Committee member, together with Eng. Hersi Said, President of Young Africans SC and Chairperson of the African Clubs Association.

A regional leader in sports development

CAF’s recognition highlights the sweeping reforms and investments implemented under President Samia’s leadership since 2021. Her administration has prioritised sports as a driver of youth empowerment, national unity and international visibility – with football at the centre of that agenda.

Among the achievements acknowledged by CAF include major infrastructure upgrades, including the refurbishment and construction of large sporting stadiums across the country and successful hosting of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which boosted Tanzania’s sporting credentials and heightened regional visibility.

There is also progress in preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Tanzania will co-host with Uganda and Kenya – the first East African joint hosting in history as well as improved international performance, with Tanzanian clubs and national teams registering stronger results in continental competitions.

A rising footballing nation

Tanzania’s domestic game has grown significantly in recent years. The Tanzanian Premier League is now ranked fifth best in Africa, an impressive climb driven by increased investment, stronger club management and improved matchday standards.

Women’s football has also received a notable boost. Under President Samia’s leadership, development programmes and competitions for girls and women have expanded, leading to rising participation rates and improved competitiveness of the national women’s team.

Youth football – long seen as the foundation of sustainable development – has equally benefited from new academies, training centres and talent identification programmes rolled out across the country.

Looking ahead to AFCON 2027

CAF’s decision to honour President Samia comes at a crucial moment, as Tanzania accelerates preparations for AFCON 2027. The government has committed to modernising stadiums, improving sports tourism offerings and strengthening football administration to ensure the tournament leaves a lasting legacy. Today’s award cements President Samia’s status as one of Africa’s leading champions of football development – and marks a proud moment for Tanzania as it continues its ascent on the continental sporting stage.
