Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has visited the strategic Zanzibar Sports City project to review ongoing construction ahead of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027).
During the visit, the government reassured the Ministry of Information, Arts, Culture and Sports, along with ORKUN GROUP – the company leading the project – that it will continue to provide an enabling environment to ensure the project is implemented efficiently, swiftly, and to international standards.
President Dr. Mwinyi was accompanied by the Minister of Information, Arts, Culture and Sports, Riziki Pemba Juma and Deputy Minister Ali Abdulgullam Hussein.
The construction of Zanzibar Sports City is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen sports infrastructure and enhance Zanzibar’s capacity to host major international competitions.
Once completed, the facility is expected to position Zanzibar as a key sporting hub in the region, boosting local tourism and creating opportunities for athletes, officials, and sports enthusiasts alike.
The first phase of the project includes:
- A 36,500-seat international football stadium
- Two 15,000-seat training grounds
- A dedicated venue for national ceremonies and events
The project is scheduled for completion by December 2026, allowing sufficient time for final preparations ahead of AFCON 2027.

The Zanzibar Sports City initiative is seen as a landmark development for the archipelago, reflecting the government’s commitment to investing in modern sports facilities that meet international standards. Beyond football, the city is expected to host athletics, cultural events, and entertainment shows, creating a vibrant hub for sports and recreation in the region.
Officials emphasise that the project will not only enhance Zanzibar’s sporting profile but also contribute to youth development, job creation, and community engagement through sports programs and events. As Zanzibar gears up to host one of Africa’s premier football tournaments, the Sports City project represents a critical step in ensuring the islands are fully prepared to welcome athletes, fans, and international visitors.
