Partnership aims to strengthen specialised treatment through advanced imaging technology, reducing surgical trauma and recovery time for eligible patients

The Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) is partnering with specialists from the United States to advance interventional radiology services, marking a step towards expanding access to modern, minimally invasive cancer treatment in Tanzania.
The collaboration brings together medical expertise to strengthen the use of image-guided procedures, which enable specialists to diagnose and treat certain conditions by directing medical instruments to targeted areas of the body using imaging technologies.
Unlike conventional open surgery, many interventional radiology procedures require only a small incision through which specialised instruments are inserted, potentially reducing damage to surrounding tissues.
For eligible patients, the approach can mean less pain, fewer complications, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery, depending on the procedure and the patient’s condition.
The partnership is expected to support ORCI’s efforts to strengthen specialised cancer services and broaden the use of advanced medical technologies in Tanzania.
Interventional radiology has an important role in cancer care, with applications that may include image-guided biopsies, tumour-directed treatments and procedures to relieve complications associated with cancer. The specific services available depend on the institute’s equipment, clinical expertise and treatment protocols.
The collaboration also highlights the importance of international partnerships in strengthening specialist skills, facilitating knowledge exchange and supporting the adoption of modern medical techniques.

For Tanzania’s healthcare sector, expanding access to specialised cancer treatment could help improve patient care while strengthening the country’s capacity to manage complex medical conditions locally.
As the partnership progresses, its impact will depend on the range of procedures introduced, the availability of trained personnel and equipment, and the number of patients who can access the services. Through the collaboration, ORCI aims to advance cancer care by combining specialised expertise with technology designed to make selected treatments less invasive and more patient-centred.
