Early this month, Minister for Health Mohamed Mchengerwa led a high-level Tanzanian delegation on a series of strategic engagements in the United States aimed at turning the recently signed Tanzania-US health-sector agreement into tangible opportunities for investment, technology transfer and healthcare development in Tanzania and across Africa.
At the US-Tanzania Health Cooperation Stakeholders’ Meeting with the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C., on September 4, 2026, Minister Mchengerwa outlined Tanzania’s readiness to deepen collaboration with American investors and institutions in pharmaceutical manufacturing, medical-equipment production and healthcare services.
The Minister presented Tanzania as an emerging regional pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution hub, leveraging its strategic position and access to the markets of both the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The Washington engagements underscored Tanzania’s ambition to move beyond reliance on imported medicines and build a competitive domestic pharmaceutical industry capable of serving a market extending well beyond its borders.
