Tanzania lifts ban on South African, Malawian agricultural products April 26, 2025 Dar es Salaam (dpa) – Tanzania has officially lifted a temporary ban on agricultural products originating from South Africa and Malawi, following swift diplomatic engagements between Tanzania and the two nations. The Minister for Agriculture, Hussein Bashe, announced the decision today through a statement, emphasising that the move came after constructive discussions initiated by the governments of Malawi and South Africa. The ban, which also restricted transit goods passing through Tanzanian territory, was in effect for just three days. "Following the ban, the governments of Malawi and South Africa reached out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation as well as the Ministry of Agriculture to seek a resolution," Minister Bashe said. Dar es Salaam (dpa) – Tanzania has officially lifted a temporary ban on agricultural products originating from South Africa and Malawi, following swift diplomatic engagements between Tanzania and the two nations.

The Minister for Agriculture, Hussein Bashe, announced the decision today through a statement, emphasising that the move came after constructive discussions initiated by the governments of Malawi and South Africa. The ban, which also restricted transit goods passing through Tanzanian territory, was in effect for just three days.

“Following the ban, the governments of Malawi and South Africa reached out to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation as well as the Ministry of Agriculture to seek a resolution,” Minister Bashe said.

He revealed that an agreement was reached for high-level diplomatic engagements. Specifically, a Malawian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, accompanied by the Ministers of Industry and Commerce, and Agriculture, are scheduled to visit Tanzania on May 2, 2025, for talks with their Tanzanian counterparts.

Regarding South Africa, Mr. Bashe noted that technical discussions between agricultural experts from both nations are ongoing to iron out trade-related concerns.

“In light of these developments, the Ministry of Agriculture has decided to lift the ban on agricultural imports from Malawi and South Africa with immediate effect,” he stated.

The temporary trade restriction was initially a retaliatory measure by Tanzania, responding to recent barriers imposed by Malawi and South Africa against Tanzanian agricultural products. The ban had not only halted imports but also prohibited the transit of South African and Malawian agricultural goods through Tanzanian borders.

Observers note that the rapid resolution highlights a commitment among the Southern African nations to address trade disputes through dialogue and preserve the spirit of regional economic integration.

The forthcoming bilateral and technical discussions are expected to pave the way for long-term solutions and reinforce trade relations within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) framework.
