NBC Premier League top-four race intensifies as SingidaBS tighten grip

By Business Insider Reporter

The battle for a top-four finish in Tanzania’s NBC Premier League has intensified dramatically as three clubs continue a fiercely contested race for continental qualification spots and stronger financial rewards ahead of the final stretch of the season.

Singida BS, JKT Tanzania and TRA United are now locked in one of the league’s most competitive mid-table battles, with only a handful of points separating the sides as the campaign enters its decisive phase.

Singida Black Stars strengthened their hold on fourth position after securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Namungo FC at Airtel Stadium in Singida. The win lifted Singida to 38 points, increasing pressure on their closest challengers with seven matches remaining before the end of the season.

TRA United and JKT share the spoils

One of the most anticipated fixtures took place at Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in Arusha, where TRA United hosted JKT Tanzania in a high-stakes encounter that ended in a 1-1 draw.

The result allowed JKT Tanzania to remain fifth on the table with 36 points, just two behind Singida Black Stars, while TRA United stayed sixth with 34 points.

Despite trailing Singida by four points, TRA United still remain firmly in contention, with club officials and supporters optimistic that teams above them could drop crucial points in the coming fixtures.

With each side left with seven matches to play, the race for fourth place is increasingly becoming one of the defining narratives of the season.

Continental ambitions and financial stakes

Beyond league positioning, the fight for a top-four finish carries major financial and strategic significance.

A strong finish in the NBC Premier League can improve clubs’ commercial attractiveness, sponsorship opportunities and chances of qualifying for regional and continental football competitions, including CAF tournaments.

The growing competitiveness of Tanzania’s domestic league also reflects broader investment trends within East African football, where clubs are increasingly strengthening their squads, commercial operations and infrastructure to compete for regional dominance.

Title race also heats up

While the battle for fourth position intensifies, attention is also turning to the championship race between Tanzanian football giants Young Africans SC and Simba SC.

League leaders Young Africans, popularly known as Yanga, are scheduled to face Dodoma Jiji FC on Wednesday, May 13, at Airtel Stadium in Singida.

Simba SC, currently second, will travel to Kigoma on Thursday, May 14, to face Mashujaa FC at Lake Tanganyika Stadium.

Yanga currently leads the league table with 54 points, five ahead of Simba, who have accumulated 48 points. Both clubs have played 22 matches.

Meanwhile, Azam FC, sitting third with 43 points, are also feeling increasing pressure from Singida Black Stars, whose recent form has tightened the competition for the league’s upper positions. As the season approaches its climax, Tanzania’s top-flight league is delivering one of its most competitive campaigns in recent years, with both the title race and the battle for continental qualification still wide open.
