Zanzibar Spice Boys have moved within one match of a tournament title in Brazil after defeating Rio Branco 3–1 in the semi-final of the Silver Medal category at PQCUPBRASIL 2026, setting up a final scheduled for October 15.
The achievement marks a significant milestone in the team’s international expedition, which began on October 5 and brings together more than 18 young players, four coaches, family members and representatives of the Zanzibar Government in an initiative aimed at exposing young footballers to international competition.
Led by expedition leader Abdulsamad Abdulrahim, the delegation’s trip is part of broader efforts to create sustainable pathways for Zanzibar’s young footballers, from grassroots development to national and international competition.
The expedition involves Ocean Business Partners, Yanga Soccer School, Dulla Sunday Sports Academy and PQ Cruzeiro, bringing together organisations associated with the development of football talent and international exposure.
In a statement issued in Brazil on October 14, the management of Zanzibar Spice Boys described the semi-final victory as an important achievement for the young players and a demonstration of their ability, discipline and competitive spirit.
The management said the team’s participation was about more than football, emphasising the value of international experience in developing talent and opening opportunities for young people.
“The journey of Zanzibar Spice Boys in Brazil is not just about football. It is part of efforts to give our young people international exposure, build their confidence, develop their talents and open doors to new opportunities through sport,” the management said.
The statement added that reaching the final was a source of encouragement for parents, guardians, coaches and other supporters while providing an opportunity to promote Zanzibar and Tanzania internationally.
The team’s progress comes as youth football development increasingly highlights the importance of combining talent identification at grassroots level with competitive experience, quality coaching and access to broader sporting networks.
“For Zanzibar, participation in international tournaments offers an opportunity to assess young players against foreign opposition, expose them to different playing styles and build their confidence in competitive environments,” Mr Abdulrahim told Business Insider.
Soccer analyst Sulle Juma said whether such exposure translates into longer-term opportunities will depend on continued training, institutional support and pathways for players to progress after the tournament.

The management has called on Zanzibaris, Tanzanians and sports stakeholders to continue supporting the team as it prepares for the final.
“Zanzibar in our hearts. Pride in our game. Discipline in our DNA,” the management said, reaffirming the values underpinning the team’s campaign. With the final scheduled for October 15, Zanzibar Spice Boys now have an opportunity to crown their Brazilian expedition with a tournament victory, further raising the profile of youth football in Zanzibar and Tanzania.
