The Port of Mtwara is expected to ship more than 550,000 tonnes of cashew nuts in the 2026/2027 season, as part of its preparations to handle the increase in production of the crop in the country.
Deputy director general of Tanzania Ports Authority, TPA, Eng. Baraka Mdima said the move is said to be a result of the investment made by the government in the port, including the upgrading of the quay, installation of modern equipment, and strengthening of human resources to handle cargo.
Cashew stakeholders who use the Port of Mtwara met on September 10, 2026, at the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) Hall, Mtwara Branch, to discuss preparations for cashew shipments for the 2026/2027 season.
The meeting aimed to put in place strategies to ensure that cashew cargo is transported on time and efficiently, while the Port of Mtwara prepares to handle more than 550,000 tonnes.
For its part, the Cashewnut Board of Tanzania (CBT) has stated that cashew production in that season could reach more than 700,000 tonnes.
CBT has also started putting in place strategies to deal with challenges that may arise due to the forecast of El Niño rains, including the possibility of issuing a 24-hour permit for cashew transportation to increase the speed of cargo clearance at the port. This measure aims to ensure that the cashews produced get timely transportation and to reduce the possibility of cargo congestion at the Port of Mtwara.
