In a landmark recognition of excellence, NMB Bank Plc has been named among Africa’s Top 40 banks in the 2025 African Business Magazine rankings, highlighting its financial strength, operational excellence, and sustainable growth.

The bank said in a statement on October 23, 2025 that the achievement solidifies its position as Tanzania’s number one lender and the only local financial institution ranked among the top five in East Africa, underscoring its regional leadership and commitment to innovation and customer-focused banking.

The recognition highlights NMB’s robust financial strength, with the ranking based on total capital, total assets, and net profits. According to the bank’s statement, the accolade reflects not only its strong profitability but also its sustained commitment to long-term growth, digital innovation, and inclusive banking practices across Tanzania and the region.

As of June 2025, NMB’s total assets exceeded TSh 14 trillion, supported by a strong capital base, robust liquidity, and a five-year net profit growth rate exceeding 30 percent. The bank’s return on equity ranks among the highest in the region, reflecting sound governance and efficient capital use.

“This recognition represents the strength of our strategy, the resilience of our people, and the trust our customers place in us,” said Ruth Zaipuna, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NMB Bank Plc.

“It is a proud moment for Tanzania and a reminder of our responsibility to keep building a world-class financial institution that delivers sustainable value for all stakeholders.”

The recognition follows NMB’s strategic execution of its 2021–2025 Medium-Term Plan, emphasizing financial inclusion, technology-driven services, and operational efficiency. Today, more than 96 percent of all customer transactions occur outside branches, a testament to the bank’s digital transformation agenda.

Beyond its financial milestones, NMB has earned a global reputation for sustainability and gender equality leadership. In 2021, the bank made history by issuing Africa’s first Gender Bond, channeling funds toward empowering women entrepreneurs.

The initiative won the Platinum Sustainable Bond of the Year Award from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Global SME Finance Forum. NMB also became the first African bank to receive the EDGE Certification for gender equality, along with the Euromoney Africa’s Best Bank for Sustainability award and Top Employer certification.

“These achievements are not just ours – they belong to every stakeholder who has walked this journey with us,” the bank said in the presser. “Together, we are not only building a bank but also transforming lives and shaping a stronger financial future for Tanzania and the region.” As Tanzania’s leading financial services provider prepares to unveil its next strategic phase, its mission remains clear: to continue shaping the future of banking through innovation, sustainability, and service excellence – cementing its role as a beacon of progress for Tanzania and the African continent.
