Tanzania’s Twiga Queens have exited the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a 4–1 loss to Ghana’s Black Queens in their final Group B match, played Monday night at the Stade Municipal de Berkane.

Ghana struck first through Princella Adubea in the 12th minute, but the Twiga Queens responded with a well-taken equaliser from Stumai Abdallah just before halftime. The second half, however, belonged to the Black Queens.

Alice Kusi converted a penalty in the 63rd minute to restore Ghana’s lead, before Evelyn Badu pounced on a defensive error in the 87th.

A brilliant top-corner finish from Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah in stoppage time sealed the result and Ghana’s spot in the quarterfinals, where they will face Algeria.

While the scoreline was harsh, the Twiga Queens leave Morocco with heads held high. In their earlier group matches, they narrowly lost 1–0 to Mali and went on to earn a valuable 1–1 draw against reigning champions South Africa – a performance that drew praise across the continent.

Despite not progressing, Tanzania’s campaign showed clear signs of progress. The team’s composure, tactical discipline, and fearless play against top-ranked sides signal the growing strength of women’s football in Tanzania.

With increased investment in talent development, domestic leagues, and youth programmes, Tanzania is fast becoming a rising force in African women’s football.

In a thrilling group-stage clash at this year’s WAFCON tournament in Morocco, Twiga Queens held reigning champions South Africa to a hard-fought 1-1 draw — a powerful statement from the underdogs against one of the continent’s strongest sides.

Their CECAFA regional success and recent continental performances underline a promising future.

The Twiga Queens may be out of WAFCON 2024, but they’ve sent a message: Tanzania is no longer just participating – it’s competing.
