The Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Engineer Innocent Luoga, has officially launched a national campaign to promote the use of clean electric cooking energy, under the slogan “Pika Smart”.

Engineer Luoga inaugurated the campaign on 13 June 2025 in Dar es Salaam on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba.

The campaign has been organised by the Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) initiative, with funding from UKAID, in collaboration with the Government through the Ministry of Energy.

Engineer Luoga stated that the campaign is part of the Government’s wider efforts to encourage citizens to shift towards clean cooking energy, with the aim of ensuring that 80 percent of Tanzanians are using clean cooking energy by the year 2034.

He reassured the public regarding the safety and affordability of electric cooking energy, highlighting that Tanzania has abundant electricity sufficient to meet national demand.

“As we are aware, the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project has now been completed, raising the country’s electricity capacity to around 4,031 megawatts. Electricity has now reached all 12,318 villages in Tanzania, and there is every reason for citizens to adopt clean electricity for cooking,” said Engineer Luoga.

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director of TANESCO, the Director of Planning and Investment, Engineer Henryfried Byabato, noted that TANESCO has actively been promoting the use of clean electric cooking energy due to the availability of power across the country.

He added that improved technologies now make electric stoves more energy-efficient and cost-effective. The Pika Smart campaign comes at an opportune time, coinciding with the Ministry of Energy’s launch of the National Communication Strategy, aimed at guiding stakeholders in promoting the use of clean cooking energy. The strategy supports the efforts of the President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, a strong advocate for clean cooking energy, to ensure Tanzanians transition from using polluting fuels to clean and sustainable energy sources.
