Kigali: The Tanzanian Women’s Cricket Team faced a narrow defeat to Nigeria by two wickets in a closely contested match mid this week, marking Nigeria’s first win at the ongoing Kwibuka Women’s T20 Tournament in Rwanda.

This year’s tournament has been a testament to Tanzania’s resurgence in women’s cricket. Under the leadership of captain Fatuma Omari Kibasu, the team has demonstrated remarkable growth and resilience.

Ms Kibasu, a seasoned all-rounder, has been instrumental in the team’s success, boasting an impressive record in T20 Internationals. Her leadership and performance continue to inspire the team and elevate Tanzania’s standing in African women’s cricket.

Match Recap: Tanzania vs. Nigeria

In the match against Nigeria, Tanzania won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite a spirited effort, they managed to post 82 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs.

Neema Justine top-scored with 21 runs, maintaining a strike rate of 100.00. However, the team struggled to build partnerships, which limited their total.

Nigeria’s chase was equally challenging, but they managed to reach 83 for 8 in the final over, securing a two-wicket victory. This win was crucial for Nigeria, who had previously lost to Zimbabwe and Brazil in their opening matches.

This year’s Kwibuka Women’s T20 Tournament follows a single round-robin format, with each team playing every other team once. The top four teams at the end of the league stage will advance to the semi-finals on 13 June 2025. Winners will move on to the final on 14 June, while the losing teams will contest the third-place playoff.
