The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has urged its customers with outstanding electricity bills to settle their debts voluntarily in order to support the utility’s operational efficiency and its ability to deliver reliable electricity services across the country.
Through a new nationwide campaign dubbed “Lipa deni, linda miundombinu, tukuhudumie” (Pay your debt, protect infrastructure, let us serve you), TANESCO aims to encourage postpaid customers to clear their arrears, while also conducting inspections of LUKU prepaid meters to ensure they are functioning properly and have not been tampered with.
Speaking to the press in Dar es Salaam, TANESCO’s Acting Director of Communications and Public Relations, Ms Irene Gowelle, said the campaign is designed to motivate customers to settle their outstanding debts voluntarily before legal enforcement measures are considered.
“Through this campaign, customers who fully repay their debts will be eligible for incentives, including interest waivers. The initiative also includes an inspection of LUKU meters to ensure they are in good working condition and have not been tampered with,” said Ms Gowelle.
The campaign’s tagline, “Sustainable Service Starts With You”, underscores the importance of public participation in protecting electricity infrastructure – an essential pillar of national development.
Ms Gowelle further emphasised that safeguarding power infrastructure is not the sole responsibility of TANESCO, but a collective duty of all citizens.

“We are promoting community-based vigilance, encouraging citizens to report incidents of theft or damage to electricity infrastructure to the relevant authorities. This will help reduce power outages and protect public assets,” she added. TANESCO is calling on the public to collaborate closely with the utility by reporting cases of electricity theft and vandalism, in order to prevent losses and ensure the continued delivery of efficient power services nationwide.
