Radio Maria Tanzania, a faith-based broadcaster, has been recognised for its powerful role in uplifting communities spiritually and socially, while also promoting gender equality in media.
The commendation came from Ms. Joyce Shebe, Chairperson of the Tanzania Media Women Association (TAMWA) and Editor-in-Chief at Clouds Media, during a special engagement with the leadership of Radio Maria Tanzania at the station’s headquarters in Mikocheni, Dar es Salaam.
“Although Radio Maria is a religious institution, it has consistently addressed social issues affecting all segments of society – the elderly, children, youth, and people with special needs,” said Ms Shebe.
She highlighted the station’s contribution through prayer, guidance and moral support, particularly during her six-year tenure as TAMWA Chair.
She pledged TAMWA continued collaboration with Radio Maria and encouraged the station’s women staff to carry out their duties with professionalism, confidence and integrity.

Embracing technology, ethical journalism
Ms. Shebe urged women journalists at the station to embrace digital innovation, regardless of their current roles.
In her view, keeping up with technological advancements is essential for professional growth and relevance in modern media.
“There’s no way to separate yourself from technology in today’s world. To avoid being left behind, everyone must embrace it,” she said.
She also reminded the team to uphold core journalism principles, including balanced reporting, inclusion and gender equality, especially in media coverage that reflects the realities of diverse community groups.
“Gender sensitivity is not just a legal requirement – it’s a responsibility. I applaud Radio Maria for incorporating equality in its recruitment and content,” she added.
On behalf of the station, Mr. Priva Lasway, National Coordinator of Radio Maria Tanzania, thanked Ms. Shebe for her unwavering support, inspiration and commitment to women’s empowerment throughout her leadership at TAMWA.
“Ms Shebe has been a true catalyst for positive change,” said Mr Lasway. “Her influence has inspired many women in media and within our own mission at Radio Maria.”
He affirmed that the station adheres to national guidelines on media fairness and content diversity, ensuring that its programming addresses both religious and social themes in an inclusive manner.
“We continue to provide content that speaks to the spiritual and everyday lives of Tanzanians, while upholding media ethics and inclusivity,” he said. Radio Maria Tanzania, established as a Catholic lay media outlet, has expanded its mission to include social advocacy, family support, and community engagement – proving that faith-based media can play a transformative role in modern Tanzania.
