Public servants urged to participate in the general election

The Office of the Treasury Registrar (OTR) has urged all public servants across Tanzania’s institutions, agencies and state-owned enterprises to take an active role in the General Election scheduled for Wednesday, 29 October 2025.

According to the OTR, public sector participation is vital to strengthening the pillars of good governance, accountability, and national unity – key foundations in Tanzania’s journey towards becoming an upper-middle-income economy worth an estimated US$1 trillion by 2050.

Speaking at a press briefing in Dar es Salaam on Monday, October 27, 2025, the Acting Treasury Registrar, Ms. Lightness Mauki, said public servants have a unique responsibility in ensuring the realisation of the national development vision, as they are the primary implementers of government policies and plans.

“Participation by public servants in the election goes beyond exercising a constitutional right – it is a patriotic act that strengthens the principles of good governance and demonstrates a genuine commitment to building an inclusive and resilient Tanzania,” said Ms Mauki.

She added that the Government has established a clear and ambitious development vision aimed at building a competitive and inclusive economy, anchored on transparency, integrity, and citizen participation in national decision-making.

Therefore, she said, the active involvement of public servants in the election process represents a direct contribution to sustaining this vision, as democratically elected leaders are the ones entrusted to implement national development programmes effectively.

Ms. Mauki emphasised that voting is a civic duty that reinforces unity, national stability, and accountability.

“Voting empowers citizens – including public servants – to choose visionary, ethical, and accountable leaders who will ensure the effective execution of development plans,” she stated.

Strengthening institutions and accountability

Ms. Mauki further explained that the Office of the Treasury Registrar, established under the Treasury Registrar (Powers and Functions) Act, Cap. 370, is responsible for overseeing and developing government investments in public institutions, state corporations, and companies in which the government holds shares or interests.

Through this mandate, the OTR has continued to promote human resource development, leadership accountability, and operational efficiency across public institutions – essential elements in building a strong and sustainable national economy.

“High participation of public servants in the election reflects patriotism, national discipline, and an understanding of constitutional responsibility,” Ms Mauki noted.

She concluded by reaffirming that a committed and responsible civil service remains a cornerstone of Tanzania’s economic transformation agenda. “This is the essence of professional public service that supports Tanzania’s journey towards an upper-middle-income economy by 2050,” she stressed.
