The Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwinyijuma, has announced that the Government has allocated TSh 11 billion for the improvement of sports infrastructure in 10 schools, selected from the country’s 56 designated sports schools.
Speaking on June 20, 2025, during the official opening of the National Secondary School Games (UMISSETA) held in Iringa Region, Mr Mwinyijuma said the initiative aims to create a more supportive environment for sports and the arts within schools, with the objective of nurturing athletes and professionals capable of competing at international levels.
In addition, he revealed that the Government has set aside TSh 32 billion to strengthen Malya Institute of Sports Development, where construction of a National Sports Academy is currently underway.
“Once completed, the academy will provide professional training and capacity building for talented athletes across the country,” said the Deputy Minister.
Sports Development Fund and Institutional Support
Mr Mwinyijuma further announced the establishment of a Sports Development Fund, aimed at supporting various sporting activities nationwide, including empowering athletes and institutions involved in the sports sector to achieve their objectives.
Moreover, the Government is planning to establish the Sports Infrastructure Management Agency (SIMA) to oversee the maintenance and development of sports facilities across the country.
He also confirmed plans to revive the Tanzania Arts and Culture Fund, which will offer low-interest loans to artists and institutions engaged in the creative and cultural industries, ensuring that the cultural sector receives adequate support for sustainable growth.
“These initiatives show the Government’s dedication to investing in youth, education, and creative potential through sport and culture,” said Mr Mwinyijuma. The announcements come amid growing national efforts to use sports and arts as tools for talent development, economic empowerment, and promoting Tanzania’s image on the global stage.
