FIFA President: CHAN success marks a new chapter for East African football

By Business Insider Correspondent

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has praised Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda for the successful co-hosting of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), describing it as a historic milestone for East African football and for the continent at large.

Speaking in Nairobi recently during the tournament final, Infantino said the organisation and hospitality surrounding the championship had demonstrated the region’s ability to stage major international sporting events.

“Congratulations to the three host nations – Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Congratulations also to CAF and my brother Patrice Motsepe for the excellent work in staging this tournament. This is a proud moment for Africa and an example to follow,” Infantino said.

Tanzania wins great recognition

For Tanzania, which hosted matches in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, Infantino noted that the contribution of Tanzanians – fans, leaders and football stakeholders – was evident in giving CHAN a distinctive character.

“Fans have turned out in huge numbers, showing a genuine love for the game. Football grows when it engages both boys and girls, and FIFA will continue to support the nurturing of talent across Africa,” he emphasised.

Developing youth talent

Infantino underlined FIFA’s commitment to investing in youth academies and talent development centres, pointing out that African players possess exceptional qualities that need institutional backing.

“The talent in East Africa is truly special. It is our responsibility to ensure that it has the chance to shine on the global stage,” he said, referring to FIFA and CAF’s ongoing investment in football development programmes.

A historic event for the region

This is the first time in CHAN’s history that the competition has been co-hosted, and East Africa has made a strong impression through efficient organisation, inter-governmental cooperation and a vibrant cultural showcase.

Although all three hosts – Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda – exited at the quarter-final stage, the tournament has left a positive mark on the future of football in the region.

Today’s final between Morocco and debut finalists Madagascar is expected to draw a packed stadium, accompanied by performances from regional stars including Tanzania’s own Zuchu, Kenya’s Savara and Uganda’s Grammy nominee Eddy Kenzo.

“Thank you, Tanzania” Infantino closed his address with words of gratitude to the host nations: “Thank you for welcoming us. Congratulations on everything you have achieved. I am truly delighted to be here.”
