Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Doto Biteko, has called on Tanzania’s tourism sector to embrace ICT and sustainable energy, as the Karibu-Kilifair 2025 exhibition highlights the country’s growing global reputation and economic potential.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko, has called for the integration of digital technology and sustainable energy solutions to propel Tanzania’s tourism sector into a new era of growth and resilience.
“We must leverage the rapid growth of ICT to market our tourism industry in strategic global markets. Relying on brochures and print magazines will not take us far in today’s digital age,” he stated.
Dr. Biteko highlighted the tourism sector’s significant contribution to Tanzania’s economy, noting that it accounts for approximately 17.2% of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and recently recorded over 5.3 million visitors, generating around $3.9 billion in revenue.
The Deputy Prime Minister also underscored the importance of adopting clean and sustainable energy solutions in tourism operations.
He visited various booths showcasing innovations such as solar-powered equipment and electric vehicles designed for tourist transport, aligning with the exhibition’s theme: “Sustainable Tourism: Building Resilience and Innovation.”
For his part, Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Mr. Dunstan Kitandula, expressed gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her visionary leadership in promoting tourism.
He announced the government’s approval for constructing a major international conference centre in Arusha, costing TSh230 billion, to further bolster the sector.
Arusha Regional Commissioner, Mr Paul Makonda, lauded the exhibition’s economic impact on the region and proposed extending its duration to enhance its contribution to regional development.

He also suggested designating the Magereza Grounds as a permanent venue for the event to reduce costs for participants.
Speaking at the official opening of the Karibu-Kilifair 2025 – International Tourism Exhibition on 6 June at the Magereza Grounds in Arusha, Dr. Biteko emphasised the need for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to adopt modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) strategies to enhance Tanzania’s visibility in global tourism markets.
International stakeholders also recognised Tanzania’s efforts in promoting tourism.
The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Tanzania, Thomas Terstegen, acknowledged the sector’s role in creating employment and increasing national revenue.
He affirmed Germany’s ongoing support for tourism initiatives across East Africa, including the joint EAC campaign, “Visit East Africa, Feel the Vibe.”
The Deputy Secretary-General of the East African Community (EAC), Andrea Murietha, reiterated the community’s commitment to collaborating with member states to ensure equitable distribution of tourism benefits.
Vice-Chairman of the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO), Henry Kimambo, expressed appreciation for the government’s collaborative approach and attentiveness to stakeholder concerns.
He advocated for continued efforts to elevate the Karibu-Kilifair to match or surpass similar exhibitions in South Africa, aiming to make it the largest in Africa.
Dr. Biteko concluded by encouraging Tanzanians to uphold their renowned hospitality and positively represent the country to attract more visitors.
He assured that the government remains committed to working with stakeholders across sectors to support tourism growth for national development.
