The President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, will visit Tanzania from June 13 to 15, 2025, in a move set to strengthen the Bank’s partnership with the country and advance development cooperation in infrastructure and economic transformation.
During the three-day visit, Dr. Adesina will hold high-level talks with President Samia Suluhu Hassan in both Dar es Salaam and Dodoma.
The discussions will focus on deepening collaboration around ongoing and future AfDB-financed projects, particularly those aimed at improving transportation networks and regional trade linkages.
In recognition of his decades-long contribution to Africa’s development, Dr. Adesina will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree by the University of Dar es Salaam.
The university cited his “outstanding leadership, lifelong commitment to Africa’s transformation,” and pivotal role in driving the continent’s development agenda.
The African Development Bank has long been a critical partner in Tanzania’s infrastructure push. As of May 2025, AfDB’s active transport portfolio in the country amounts to US$2.41 billion – representing approximately 66% of its total infrastructure investment in Tanzania.
These funds support key road, rail, and aviation projects intended to boost logistics efficiency, enhance connectivity, and position Tanzania as a central trade and transit hub in East Africa.
Dr Adesina will also tour several Bank-financed projects during his stay, underscoring the AfDB’s commitment to high-impact investments that unlock economic potential and improve livelihoods.
This official visit comes at a time when Tanzania is witnessing sustained growth across sectors, including mining, agriculture, and infrastructure. AfDB’s continued engagement reflects the shared vision between the institution and Tanzania to foster inclusive development and regional integration.
